About

Artist Robert Tindall was born in Klagenfurt in the province of Carinthia, Austria near the border with the former Yugoslavia. As the son of a family serving in the Forces, he spent many holidays during his childhood and teenage years in East Africa and in Europe.

Educated at Radley College, near Oxford, he was taught art by the American artist Charles M Mussett.

For nearly twenty years after leaving school, painting was placed on the back burner whilst Robert pursued a career in land agency during which he was involved in the management of four beautiful rural estates in Northumberland, Dorset, County Durham and finally in Shropshire where for the last thirty eight years he has lived and worked on the slopes of Brown Clee Hill in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Robert’s return to painting occurred when, during a holiday in Spain in 1988 with his family and the artist Romy Jacob, he was encouraged to take up art again.

For well over the next ten years he studied landscape painting and life and portrait drawing with three well known professional Shropshire artists and teachers: David Stoves, Richard Wardle and David Howorth.

At the outset Robert was particularly influenced by Cezanne’s landscapes and so he developed a strong interest in painting the Spanish region between Valencia and Alicante, the lakes and forests on Brown Clee Hill and the estuaries and seascapes of the Suffolk coast.

He paints mainly in oils but also uses watercolour, soft pastels and pencil. He works directly from the subject and likes to explore the subtle and elusive affinity between sky, water and land.

Robert has a studio in Shropshire and one in Suffolk. He has also restored a vintage Plymouth Pilot 18’ Motor Launch from which he can paint the areas surrounding the Rivers Alde and  Ore and espessaily Butley Creek.

He considers himself an “amateur” artist in the true meaning of the word. As well as shows in aid of community projects, solo exhibitions of his work have been held at:

  • Dinham House Gallery, Ludlow
  • Malthouse gallery, Bishops Castle
  • Helios Gallery, Kings Heath, Birmingham
